"Description Summary:

In this fast-paced environment, the Phlebotomist is a member of the clinical lab team whose primary responsibilities in support of the Frederiksted Health Care, Inc. (FHC) mission, performs routine tasks under the supervision of the Lab. Director. The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood, urine, and other samples, appropriately packaging them, and preparing them to be sent for off-site or on-site analysis as indicated by the requisition. Due to the nature of phlebotomists' jobs, an ability to read and follow careful directions is imperative in order to ensure the safety and accuracy of patients' specimen collection and test results. Assists and keeps the Lab Director informed of all communications with external laboratory, patients, nursing personnel, and registration staff. May be assigned to any of the FHC clinical lab locations on weekends depending on location and the facility’s hours of operation.

Essential Functions:

1. Performs hematological, chemical, immunological, microbiological, and biophysical diagnostic examinations of blood, urine, spinal fluid, fecal specimens, throat swabs, or other body fluids, including specimen collections.

2. Maintains records of procedure performance, patient results, quality controls, and preventive/corrective maintenance of equipment.

3. Maintains equipment in accordance with defined policies and protocols and logs preventive and remedial maintenance of equipment. Logs performance of equipment including but not limited to daily temperature checks.

4. Prepares and examines feces and other body fluids for diagnostic tests.

5. Participates in continuing education program to enhance and maintain medical technician skills.

6. Promotes a safe environment for patients and staff in accordance with established laboratory policies and procedures and OSHA standards.

7. At times, phlebotomists may be required to field patient inquiries, or troubleshoot specimen collection issues.

8. Data entry skills and basic knowledge of medical software are an added bonus as patient and specimen information must be inputted manually following proper protocol and procedure.

Position requirements / Job qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:

• Graduation from high school or GED certificate; some college preferred.

• Certification in phlebotomy from a state-recognized program is required prior to the start of the job and continuous COLA training and orientation mandatory.

• Minimum of one (1) year training in a school for laboratory technicians.

• Current CPR/BLS certificate required.

• FHC requires Phlebotomist designated as certified and will recognize certification from the National Health Career Association (NHA), as an internal policy for all FHC Labs sites, as proscribed by the Lab Director.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of the requirements and standards involved in maintaining a safe laboratory environment.

• Knowledge of the basic theories, principles and practice of medical technology

• Knowledge of the literature and current developments in medical laboratory technology.

• Skill in the use of laboratory equipment and instruments.

• Ability to maintain and prepare clear, concise records and reports,

• Ability to identify actual or potential health and safety hazards.

• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.

• Ability to acquire new knowledge, skills and techniques to remain current in medical technology practice.

• Must work well with others as they interact directly with patients.

• Should be comfortable interacting with patients of all ages, including infants and the elderly.

• An ability to reason well under pressure and reassure the patient will be helpful.

Work Environment
