Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the requirements at their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:

• U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens are unavailable, per VA Policy.
• Degree of doctor of medicine or equivalent from an approved school.
• Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S. or its territories.
• Residency Training: Completion of VA-approved residency in an accredited core specialty leading to board eligibility. Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA-accredited programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and work under supervision.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.

• Physical requirements: Sedentary work with some walking, standing, bending, and carrying light items. No special physical demands.

Duties

The psychiatrist will provide outpatient psychiatric services, including face-to-face and telepsychiatry, in support of the Psychiatry Service at the Phoenix VA Health Care System. Routine duties include patient screening, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, crisis intervention, psychotherapy, medication management, patient education, and participation in committees. The role may involve telehealth, supervision of students and residents, and participation in specialty programs like MHICM. Work schedule options include a compressed schedule upon approval.
