Job Summary
The Commercial Sheet Metal Technician III is a senior-level technician responsible for leading and installing complex HVAC sheet metal systems on commercial construction projects. This role includes system layout, duct installation, crew leadership, and ensuring all work meets safety, quality, and code requirements.
Install commercial HVAC duct systems (rectangular, round, spiral) in facilities such as schools, hospitals, offices, and retail buildings.
Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and SMACNA specifications to ensure accurate layout and installation.
Lead small crews; coordinate daily tasks with the foreman or superintendent.
Install supports, hangers, equipment, and accessories according to plans and codes.
Follow all OSHA and company safety guidelines.
Manage materials: verify deliveries, track inventory, and communicate needs to site leadership.
Coordinate with other trades to avoid conflicts and maintain project schedules.
Train and mentor Sheet Metal Tech I/II team members and apprentices.
Conduct quality checks to ensure installations meet project specifications.
Assist with system start-up, testing, and punch-list completion.
Advanced knowledge of commercial HVAC duct systems, fabrication, and installation practices.
Ability to lead crews and work independently.
Proficient in reading mechanical plans and detail drawings.
Familiarity with SMACNA standards, local codes, and air-balancing requirements.
Skilled with hand/power tools, lifts, and layout tools.
Strong communication, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
High school diploma or GED (required).
Completion of a sheet metal apprenticeship or equivalent training.
7–10 years of commercial sheet metal experience, including 2+ years in a lead or supervisory role.
OSHA 10 (required).
OSHA 30 (preferred).
Commercial construction sites, including rooftops and mechanical rooms.
Ability to lift 50–75 lbs, stand, kneel, climb ladders, and work at heights or in confined spaces.
Exposure to varying weather and typical construction site conditions.
