Description

Under the direction of the Community Development Director, and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, the ESL Coordinator is responsible for the curriculum development and the daily management of the English as a Second Language (ESL) program.The ESL Coordinator will oversee program operation, the supervision of teachers, be responsible for the development of the registration process and student evaluations, and foster positive relationships with and between students. The (ESL) Class Coordinator will demonstrate cross-cultural intelligence and sensitivity while serving as the primary bridge builder between students, teachers and volunteers. The Coordinator will maintain program best practices and facilitate communications between the YMCA and the host site.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

· Design, develop and/or search for quality ESL curriculum that ensure advancement in language acquisition, cultural adaptation and assimilation, and social networking of adult students

· Oversee the supervision, safety, and well-being of the ESL teachers and program participants

· Develop procedures for teachers to implement curriculum and support their training in new content or programs

· Mentor, coach and support ESL teachers towards meeting program objectives, including acculturation and graduation

· Observe work of teaching staff to evaluate performance, and to recommend changes that could strengthen teaching skills

· Communicate with teachers weekly about duties and new program information

· Review and approve lesson plans submitted by teachers on a weekly basis

· Review and approve students’ final exams submitted in advance by teachers

· Coordinate and monitor substitute teachers’ coverage and responsibilities with teachers

· Plan and lead all ESL program staff meetings

· Analyze student academic and attendance data

· Produce ESL Program quarterly Data/Impact Report

· Communicate with students and volunteers on a weekly basis

· Create and distribute marketing materials to promote student registration from the community

· Plan and organize community registration events and testing of students

· Coordinate Conversation Groups, including room set-up/clean-up, purchase of snacks and selection of materials as needed

· Coordinate ESL Program End-of-Session, including management of teachers’ duties, documentation and testing, purchase of supplies, celebration details and communication with students

· Communicate with Community Development Director bi-weekly to report and/or approve teachers’ meeting and substitute teaching hours

· Support the Community Development Director with planning and implementation of Community Workshop Series

· Maintain a solid care/support system for students including an active agency referral network in collaboration with Community Development Director

· Create and maintain shared digital system of records for resource sharing and referrals in collaboration with Community Development Director

· Connect with Community Development Director and YKids Director for ESL-YKids program needs, including facilities and students concerns as needed

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior experience leading an ESL program or teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), understanding and upholding Christian principles and their impact, or equivalent university preparation
  • Bachelor’s Degree OR minimum 5 years ESL experience
  • Required language proficiency: English and Spanish
  • Knowledge in theories of language acquisition
  • Knowledge of computer-based technology skills
  • Experience with program management (administration, budget, metrics, reporting, etc
  • Cross-cultural competency and familiarity with communities being served
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with diverse individuals, groups and organizations
  • Must be able to relate well with students and always promote and environment conducive learning
  • General knowledge of YMCA programs, philosophies, and objectives
  • Ability to represent the YMCA in a mature and professional manner to YMCA philosophies
  • Will acquire CPR/First Aid Certification within thirty days of employment

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:

  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
  • Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
  • Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  • Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
  • Ability to work irregular work hours, including evenings and weekends on occasion.
  • Fluent in English, written and verbal communication.
